AS Music Magazine Double Page Spread Deconstruction – NME

General Layout:

The main image cover one side of the A3 spread, by placing the image on the left whilst consumers read the article the image is having a constant reminder on the audience about what it’s about. There is no other image in this article, this is maybe to draw all attention on the artist and how she is representing the article.

This A3 spread has more of an image rather than wording. There are only two columns with a rather large masthead which may mean that they image is what is selling this article and that the masthead is everything that you need to know and is telling the basic story. The colours Red and Black suggest a dark but passionate side to the story and suit the personality of Taylor Momsen from The Pretty Reckless. Taylor Momsen is seen as a person that doesn’t care about her appearance and what other people think about her.

The colour scheme black, red and a bit of white, the reason why the main colour is black might be because of the reason that Taylor Momsen is wearing all black. Red suggests that there is angry but passion in Taylor Momsen and this is what the headline is talking about. All three of the colours compliment each other in this article because they cancel out and make each other neutral.

Text elements:

The headline is noticeable because the writing and style of font is different from the rest of the text. The word ‘wild’ is written in a different font from the rest of the text because that word describes the personality of Taylor Momsen. As soon as the audience looks at the image there eyes are automatically draw across the page towards the headline ‘Wild Child’ represents the image and the personality of the artist. The kicker is placed directly below the headline, having certain word coloured different to attract the attention from the audience. The kicker gives that slight push into attracting the consumers’ attention into wanting to read the full article.

Images:

The colours of this image are used in a way that they compliment each other. Taylor Momsen is represented as a ‘bad’ girl which explains the black clothes with bleached blonde hair. The black background brings out the fact that Taylor Momsens hair is bleach blonde and gives the impression to the audience that she doesn’t really care about her image as she has black roots. The dark make-up completes the look of a ‘bad’ girl image because not a lot of teenage girls wear a lot of dark make-up and it is a hard and sultry image. However it’s ironic that she is has the hair covering half of her face, this suggest that she is quite shy and self-conscious telling us that she might have another side to her. Having Taylor Momsen run her hand through her hair and having her mouth partly open is portrayed as quite seductive and promiscuous.

In image fits well with the title of this article ‘Wild Child’ because they appearance of the artist doesn’t seem to bother her. This image suggest something dark and secretive which would attract the audience into wanting to read the article to know what is going on with Taylor Momsen. This article suggesting from the title is telling the audience that Taylor Momsen herself is telling the story with dark and meaningful truth.

Tone and register:

The tone and register in this article are used from an actual perspective of a teenager, using the words how the artist speaking helping the audience relate to the artist and feeling a connection to the artist. The artist is saying any normal thing that I teenager would feel which therefore makes the audience relate and understand what the artist is saying. The audience reading the article would more likely have some interest of Taylor Momsen and know what she is doing, having the title ‘Wild Child’ attracts the audience because they would know that something is happening and be draw in to knowing what was happening with her and what her said of the story is.
